Introduciton

Description

My name is Amina Ahmed and I am a senior at the University of Louisville. I am a student of History, with a special focus and interest in African Studies. During this trip I hope to actively engage and contribute to the development of cultural awareness in effort to become an agent in expanding constructive social movements. Though my engagement in Cape Town is limited, my intention is to be able to co-construct accessible methodological research in reference to the WomanSpirit project in which I will soon be working on. If anything, I am here as an invited guest to participate and gain insight into South African cultural customs and traditions. As a Somali growing up in America, it is interesting to observe the parallels between my own cultural customs, values, and beliefs with that of the United States and South Africa. My particular interest is in learning the ways in which studying history transcends not only time, but also race in relation to remembering and reconciling with our past in order to not only coexist, but to build meaningful relationships.
