I am a second year graduate student in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Louisville. For the last two years I have worked with the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research and, as a result have become very interested in racial justice issues. After this trip, I hope to find a job in this field of work. South Africa has a very interesting and important racial history so it has been amazing to study the country this semester and compare it to the history of the U.S. South. I also was able to take an independent reading class on South African literature this year that was very informative. Most of the novels were written by women who based them on their own childhood experiences with apartheid. I am really looking forward to working with Ingrid and the Womanspirit project. I am also looking forward to seeing Robben Island and the townships after reading so much about them.
