Politically Minded

Title

Politically Minded

Description

This is clearly a picture of a baboon on top of a building. And it looks like its holding the Israeli flag. And while seemingly innocuous, this primate made me think a lot about a frequent topic of conversation with each of the activists we were meeting as well as the local folks: the Israeli/Palestenian conflict.

What I think is so interesting is that most people we have talked to down here not only know a lot about what is going on in Israel/Palestine but they have pretty strong opinions on it. This is certainly interesting to me because I don't know a whole lot of folks back home that know alot or care about the ongoing struggle in Israel/Palestine. Maybe it's because of the types of people we are encountering or the types of conversations we are setting up but even at the bar on the first night here, somehow the topic of conversation moved onto Israel/Palestine. Given the history of Jewish involvement in resistance movements as well as South Africa as part of the Jewish diaspora, this certainly makes a little bit of sense. But I can't help feeling that people here seem to be a little bit more politically minded then back home. Again, this could be a generalization based upon my immediate surroundings and the types of people we are encountering, but it certainly seems to hold true.
